Last March, I wrote about my middle daughter, Adi, and how she hums while she eats. It was a sound that made me stop and listen, savoring the joy she experienced while eating foods she really loved. Adi will be four in May and the humming is now a rare occurrence. Every once in a while, it makes a brief appearance.
Rose, the baby of the family, will be ten months this week and she also hums while she eats. It was pretty early on that I realized she was going to follow in her big sister’s footsteps as a hummer. We have yet to find food that Rose doesn’t enjoy. She’s been feeding herself for months already and as she smushes food into her mouth, with her chubby little hands, she hums almost ferociously. You can see a video of this phenomenon here.
This pattern of humming has me wondering if this might be a genetic?
I love the simplicity and joy of this slice! Flashing back to your other daughter’s love of humming added validity to your claim. I enjoyed the attached video to see this humming in action. Such a sweet slice! May your daughters always hum when they eat – you must be feeding them well!

HysSterical! Rose has heard Adi humming her whole life – even before she was born! Now that she’s taking over, it’s clear that she looks up to her big sister! It’s a passing of the baton! Such a sweet simple slice!

What a sweet slice! You capture one of the joys of parenthood–watching and loving your children in their daily moments. The humming might be generic :), but I think Rose really likes her food!

I agree with your previous reader, you’ve captured a simple joy here. Every time I think I’m studying my life at a granular level, I read a piece like this and think, “I have to see more.” By the way, my daughters hum while they eat, too. It’s so funny when conversation dies down and it’s just humming sometimes. Like your older daughter, mine does it less now…but it comes and goes. (maybe depending on how much she likes the food?). Thanks for sharing this beautiful slice of your life!

Thank you for this. As I wrote this last night I kept second guessing myself. It didn’t seem like “enough.” Thank you for seeing more in it than I did in that moment. It feels like enough today.

I remember reading Adi’s humming slice and thinking how observant and creative you were to write about it. And now here you are again. I love the comparison of the 2 and like Dawn said it’s like passing the baton. Did Wren ever do that?

I love this – it’s such a true and honest slice. I love the video to see it in action. My oldest daughter hummed while she ate too – right into adulthood. We were just saying last week that no one eats louder than she does!
Thank you for sharing – wonderful capture.

This slice just perfect and filled me with joy. The added bonus of the video definitely helped. The humming and enjoying food by sweet Rose put a smile on my face. You’ve also helped remind me that sometimes the best slices are the tiny moments in our lives. We don’t have to write a lot to paint big pictures. Thank you!

What a beautiful sound and example of bonding. This reminds me of my relationship with my older sisters and how I admired everything they did and still do. Thank you for igniting such wonderful memories.

I love this post because it reminds me of how I find myself humming while I am in the market.

Great title, it pulls the reader in with mystery and intrigue. If you are looking for something to write in the coming days, I think this could make a fantastic and fun poem with the humming written right into it.
