“Is my teacher famous?” Adi asked as she pulled a flier from her take home folder. “Her name is always on these handouts.”
I took the paper from her and scanned, trying to figure out what she was talking about. The flier was advertising a school cleanup day and Adi’s teacher helps take care of the school gardens.
I laughed. She is famous indeed, at least in our eyes.
I recently chatted with my husband about how Adi is having her happiest year in school yet. He reminded me that this is her first school year that she’s actually been able to go to school full time. The pandemic hit when she was in kindergarten.
This week, teacher appreciation week, I’m thinking about how fortunate our kids have been to have teachers that fill their days with so much joy. Working in a school, I know that this is no small feat. I take every opportunity to share these glimmers of joy back to the girls’ teachers. I want them to know that they matter.
I hope all teachers feel those glimmers coming back to them this week and that they’re reminded that the impact that they have on their students reaches far beyond the classroom. You are famous in the kids eyes, and ours too.

I always think about how kids think of teachers as always being at school. How they are so shocked to see you in the outside world of the grocery store or park.

Isn’t it great that the majority of students do seem to appreciate their teachers and hold them in high esteem, just like your daughters?! It’s the feeling I get from most of the students I interact with.
